Early 2-phase Orthodontic treatment vs. Traditional Orthodontics

Early 2-phase Orthodontic treatment vs. Traditional Orthodontics

There has been a large paradigm shift in orthodontics in that we no longer look at just the teeth when treatment planning orthodontics. The entire face, jaws, muscles must be taken into consideration. With traditional orthodontics we would wait until the children were completed, their growth and try to straighten their teeth. If we had to remove permanent teeth to make room for other teeth we would. If a jaw was misaligned we would recommend surgery. Gone are the days of ‘old school’ orthodontics. With the advent of a 2-phase treatment philosophy we can work on correcting much more than just the teeth. We can detect jaw problems, growth and development problems, airway problems, and muscular problems early enough to prevent such complicated treatment in the future. Early 2-phase orthodontics is much simpler than traditional orthodontics in that the first phase is directed towards correcting any jaw problems and the second phase is directed towards fine tuning of the bite.  It typically takes less time and is easier on the child and all the issues can be corrected!
