Did you know that there is a huge correlation between ADHD, Bedwetting, Sleep and Orthodontics. Strange to think how they could be correlated. Well, many children who have small or crowded jaws can have certain sleep breathing disorders. If a lower jaw is positioned too far back or an upper jaw is too narrow a child can have reduced breathing or labored breathing during sleep. To compensate a child will wake them up without even knowing it to gasp for more air and then fall back asleep. This can happen several times during a child’s sleep known as sleep apnea. What happens is that a child becomes overtired from these little sleep disturbances throughout the night and when it comes time for the brain to tell the child to wake up to urinate the child cannot. This leads to bed-wetting also called nocturnal enuresis. During the day time the child is again overtired from a lack of sleep and presents with similar symptoms to ADHD such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity or impulsive behaviors. Simple Orthodontic intervention can help alleviate underlying jaw problems, help improve breathing and also allow your child to get the proper sleep they need to grow and develop.
